Sir Martin Rees
Earth in its Final Century
Sir Martin Rees, the famous cosmologist and astrophysicist, spoke on the development of the universe, and our planet, for this TED talk from July 2005. Rees started with the Big Bang origin of the universe, and moved forward in time six billion years to the dying days of a sun. He next turned his attention to the history of humanity on this planet now reaching a critical turning point in the 21st century. At this time, he explains, man can substantially cause changes on our planet as never before in human history. Calling himself “a concerned member of the human race,” Rees, from the viewpoint of a scientist, addressed the challenges facing mankind, as Einstein had about the issues existing decades before. The collective wisdom of scientists needs to be applied, Rees said, to function as the moral compass, to stimulate the action necessary, and to ensure that the developments in our lifetime preserve our interests into “the immense future.”
