Mary Watson Whitney
(11 Sep 1847 - 20 Jan 1921)

American astronomer who, as professor of Astronomy at Vassar, continued the work of her predecessor, Maria Mitchell. They developed Vassar's renowned scientific program and enabled women graduates to perform as equals with the men in the field of astronomy. Whitney's research on the precise measurements of photographic plates were original studies in the field.
