Louis le Chanoine Rendu
(1789 - 1859)
French geologist and bishop who in 1840 published his Théorie des Glaciers (Theory of the Glaciers of Savoy, (translation by Alfred Wills published 1874). He observed that the middle of glaciers move faster than the sides, that their motion is of the same kind as the motion of a river, and the ice is in a certain sense plastic.
