American geneticist who pioneered the field of yeast molecular biology which led to the use of yeast as biological factories for the commercial production of vaccines and other pharmaceuticals. His work in classical genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology has yielded numerous discoveries in biology, including a method for genetically engineering salt and drought tolerant plants. His lab has pioneered a better understanding of gene regulation, mutation, and recombination.
