(22 Feb 1839 - 11 Apr 1906)

American publisher and editor who wrote the famous editorial (21 Sep 1897) 'Is There a Santa Claus' in The Sun, New York City, (21 Sep 1897) in response to the eight-year-old Virgina O'Hanlon who wrote asking, 'Is there a Santa Claus?' because her Papa said, 'If you see it in the The Sun it's so.'
