Mercury (Mulberry books) by Seymour Simon HarperCollins (1998) Paperback Used Price: $1.78 ![]() |
Product Description: People have followed Mercury's path through twilit skies since ancient times, but only since Mariner 10 flew by in 1974 have we begun to unravel themysteries of the sun's closest neighbor. Impressive NASA photographs willtake you to a cratered world where days hot enough to melt lead and nightsat 300 degrees below zero last for almost three months. Customer Review: Mercury another kids book: Another kids book. Big type so little is said. Some of pictures are good but very little detailed reference info for anyone above the very basic beginners astronomy level. Would be a good book for parents to read to their young grade school kids but thats about it. No real meat and potatoes of detailed information. Please Simon can you write a book for grownups wanting reference info on Mercury. Also the newest info about the farside of the planet is not there as book was published before the latest flyby. Have not read a really good science book by Seymore Simon yet. All of his writings about science that I have read are for young kids. Customer Review: Do you like space?: I lost count somewhere around "Oceans" or "Dogs," but this has to be Simon's millionth book. Either way, there's no arguing that this guy can write some great material for kids and even adults (who have kids and are smart enough to read with them so they don't grow up illiterate). I doubt Stephen Hawking read this book and had some amazing epiphany, nevertheless, this entire series of planet books is perfect for grade school through middle school science reports and projects or even if you just want to learn a bit more about what's out there in our universe. Full color and page-sized photos only add to Simon's academically written text that truly gets kids into science and into wondering about the world about them.

MERCURY (Smithsonian Library of the Solar System) by STROM ROBERT G Smithsonian (1987) Hardcover Used Price: $0.59 ![]() |
Customer Review: Concise Summary of the Current Knowledge About Mercury: Even though this book is almost fifteen years old, it is not out dated at all, since the last space exploration mission to Mercury was flown in 1974 by the Mariner 10 space probe. It is one of the few books, other than children's books or NASA publications, which provides a detailed description of this planet. The first chapter of the book "The Elusive Planet" opens with the knowledge acquired from Earth based observation, which is very minimal, hence the title of the book and chapter. The book then proceeds to the development of the Mariner 10 space vehicle, mission plan and flight to Mercury. The remainder of the book deals with the discovers made by the Mariner 10 space probe, such as, the general surfaces features, the planet's interior, how impact craters are formed, and some of the unique geological features found on Mercury. This book is extremely easy to read, since it does not contain any unnecessary geological terms. In addition, there are plenty of nice black and white photos and numerous line drawings. |

Exploring the Inner Solar System: Expecting the Unexpected AAAS (2006) Paperback Used Price: $32.82 ![]() |
Product Description: With NASA's MESSENGER spacecraft streaking past Venus on its way to Mercury, AAAS has teamed with the space agency to publish Exploring the Inner Solar System: Expecting the Unexpected, a book designed to inspire student interest in space sciences. The book, aimed at science educators and students, focuses on the moon and the solar system's four terrestrial planets: Mars, Earth, Venus, and Mercury. It features dozens of pictures and detailed discussion of both past missions and future expectations for MESSENGER, which is due to make its first Mercury flyby in January 2008. "Millions of people, from professional scientists to science-engaged citizens, first got excited about science by following NASA space missions," said Bob Hirshon, AAAS senior project director. "The MESSENGER mission to Mercury is a chance to excite a new generation of budding scientists." "We're trying to put the MESSENGER mission to Mercury in a broader context by showing how we reached our current understanding of the inner solar system," said the book's author, Justin Warner, who serves as a reporter for AAAS's daily Science Update radio program.
